For Wednesday, Dec.  3 training night for LeMars Fire Rescue, they took a tour of the Sioux City Fire Rescue’s Regional Hazmat truck, which they brought to LeMars to show to the department. Sioux City Fire Rescue (SCFR) operates a regional hazardous materials (HAZMAT) program using dedicated response vehicles, including a specific truck known as “Hammer 13” (or now referred to as Hazmat 4), and associated trailers. The definition of what qualifies as a hazardous materials (HazMat) incident has changed dramatically in recent years—and so has the approach to handling it. We can no longer prepare solely for overturned fuel tankers or leaking shipping containers.
