Fire at pet cemetery

On Tuesday, July 1, a fire broke out at the Loving Rest Pet Cemetery south of Des Moines. The fire engulfed the crematorium and affected the attached chapel. There were seven fire departments engaged in fighting the fire: North Warren, Carlisle, Hartford, Indianola, Norwalk, Des Moines and the Crash/Fire/Rescue team from the Des Moines Airport. EMS support was provided by Northern Warren ambulance, Mercy Medical Center ambulance and Fraser ambulance. Three firefighters were taken to area hospitals, two with heat related issues and one with an ankle injury. Polk County Emergency Management also provided a cooling tent for rehab.
