Here it comes again

The coming of March means many things. The typical final blizzard of the season, usually during State High School tournament time. The melting of winter snow as the days grow longer and warmer. First sprouts of green grass. And of course, Saint Patrick’s Day.

For a little Gaelic language lesson. Fir Na Tine. Which means, Men of Fire, in Gaelic. And Fir bhean, which is lady of fire.

The fire service is rich in Irish history. Irish heritage families have made up the rosters of bucket brigades, fire brigades, or fire departments in every major city since the start of the fire service in America. Many of the largest departments today still have a majority of their members that are Irish or Irish descent. Why?

The Irish were willing to perform the dangerous duties of law enforcement and fire service because they saw it as an honor to serve the new country they called home. Public service was a badge of honor.

Most of you reading this are not Irish. But we all have the same spirit to serve our communities, to help others in need, and uphold the honor of being a firefighter.

I would like to thank all the departments that have submitted their memberships to the SDFA. It is not too late to submit your membership. If your department would still like to be members, you can send in your membership payment and roster, and still receive the basic coverage and benefits of the SDFA.

The high school scholarship applications are due on March 15th

The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) will be meeting in May at Washington DC. Jeremy Walla and I will be attending the meetings and going to talk with the South Dakota congressional delegates. Having South Dakota representation in the various ranking positions, the volunteer fire service should have an understanding voice at any discussion.

The NFPA standards to OSHA regulations is still an ongoing debate and will be discussed at the spring meetings. Public hearings were completed with some eye-opening considerations brought forth by volunteer services.

Keep checking the SDFA webpage and Facebook for State Fire School 2025 updates and listings.

   Stay safe,

Charlie Kludt,

SDFA President
