Ogallala structure fire

At about 2:55 p.m. January 14, firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire in Ogallala. Four units from the Ogallala Volunteer Fire Department responded with the Keith County Sheriff’s Office assisting with traffic control an initial contact with adjacent residents. Units from other departments including Paxton and Brule also responded. Firefighters arrived at the scene of a residential wood frame structure with flames showing from the windows and front door. Smoke detectors were not sounding at arrival of firefighters. All occupants of the house were out upon arrival.  Firefighters extinguished the primary fire in about 25 minutes, according to a report from the Ogallala Volunteer Fire Department. Salvage and overhaul was extensive due to interior conditions and structural integrity issues.  The process was further hampered by the freezing temperatures. The structure is standing, but not inhabitable. The Nebraska state fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire. However, preliminary the report states use of an electric space heater as a probable cause. The Ogallala Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary provided hot beverages and assisted with rehab at the scene. Area residents also brought hot coffee and refreshments to the scene. No injuries were reported. About 34 firefighters responded to the fire. Ogallala Fire units were back in service at 8:30 p.m.
