Structure Fire in Guttenberg

On Thursday Dec. 1, 2022 at 8:33 p.m. the Guttenberg Fire Department was dispatched to 523 N. 2nd Street for a fully involved structure fire with people possible still inside. Upon arrival of the first fire personnel, it was determined there was smoke and fire coming from the south end of a group home assisted living residence. We were advised that there were five individuals that lived there, and staff had not accounted for all of them yet. As resources were sent to help locate the missing individuals a fire attack team was also established.

Within minutes four of the missing individuals were located outside the building and attended to by EMS. The fifth individual was located by firefighters inside the structure and assisted to EMS for treatment. All five residents were transported to the Guttenberg Hospital for evaluation and treatment for any injuries.

An initial investigation was started once there was better visibility inside the structure and the fire was knocked down. The Iowa State Fire Marshal’s office was contacted to assist with the investigation. The fire department cleared the scene at 1:30 a.m. At 2 a.m. the fire department returned to the site for some hot spots and fire flare ups and to make sure all fires were extinguished.

At this time there is no obvious signs of foul play, but the investigation is ongoing.

The Guttenberg Fire Department was assisted by the Garnavillo Fire Department, Garber Fire Department, Guttenberg Ambulance, Garnavillo EMS, Clayton County Sheriff’s Department, Guttenberg Police Department, and Iowa State Fire Marshals.
